All-new Bentley Flying Spur Review: Redefining Automotive Expectations
October 29 2020,
Cars, for many, are very little more than a means to get from point A to point B. For others, cars are not only for transportation; they generate an emotion. And for some, those who have experienced many forms of different automotive iterations, a car must push the boundaries in every area to truly impress. It is with this in mind that Bentley designed the all-new Flying Spur.
Introduced in its current form in 2019, the latest generation Bentley Flying Spur is not only differentiated by a stunning design that has been unanimously praised since launch, it is now at the cutting edge of engineering and technological advancement. Power, comfort, connectivity, safety, design, craftsmanship, refinement, luxury… All have been pushed to the boundary to create a vehicle that sets a new benchmark for what the automobile can be.
Limitless power
Powering the Bentley Flying Spur since launch is a twin-turbo W12 engine delivering 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. This engine, also available in the Continental GT, is not just mighty, it is also smooth and refined. Designed to deliver immediate power at any RPM, it always delivers the exact amount of acceleration the driver requires at the moment he or she requires it.
It is important to understand that in a Bentley Flying Spur, despite having 626 horsepower on tap, nothing is ever rushed or brutal. The accelerations are akin to a 787 Dreamliner taking off, very much like in the Continental GT, while the passengers feel like they are seated in first class with a glass of champagne. Of course, the power delivery is linear, and it is also boundless. Reaching 100 km/h requires less than 4.0 seconds, but it doesn’t feel that way. The Bentley Flying Spur simply goes predictably and smoothly.
The Bentley Flying Spur can reach a top speed of over 300 km/h and at speed, Bentley says the car is following the momentum of the Earth’s rotation. Regardless of which speed the driver reaches, however, the balance, poise and stability are outstanding.
The same can be said when driving over rough terrain or poor quality roads. The Flying Spur absorbs the bumps and potholes with grace, even with the available 22-inch wheels. The driver doesn’t feel disconnected from the road, merely isolated. That’s the sweet spot for any automobile. Control remains constant and so does stability.
A vehicle of this size normally would compromise on handling. All-wheel drive is standard, but it works like a rear-wheel drive setup in most circumstances. The design helps push the Flying Spur through corners with remarkable agility, but also ensures absolute stability when grip and traction are limited. In simple terms, the Flying Spur reacts like a much smaller performance vehicle when cornering on dry or wet pavement, but it is also always able to prevent slippage and loss of traction in snowy or icy conditions.
At lower speeds, rear-wheel drive steering and 48-volt adaptive anti-roll bars play a role as well, ensuring effortless maneuvering in tighter environments.
The Bentley Flying Spur does not drive big, but it certainly is big inside for all. Owners will likely want to drive the car, but being driven is certainly an option. In such a case the rear seats provide a first-class environment where work or relaxation is not only possible but encouraged.
Up front, impressive technologies await, all housed in the finest materials. The highlight is the rotating centre touchscreen display that can offer various screens as well as three information gauges. It’s elegant, but also far more advanced than any previous Bentley product.
And of course, being a Bentley, the vehicle can be configured to your exact specifications with the exact colour and materials you desire. Discover the new benchmark in automotive today by taking the new Bentley Flying Spur for a test drive.
